Description

Approximately 15,000 to 18,000 soldiers now rest in this memorial cemetery, which was established after the Treaty of Lausanne (1923) by consolidating various temporary frontline cemeteries—such as Galinier, Ambulance, Morto, 1st Division, and 2nd Division—that had been created at different locations on the peninsula during the Gallipoli Campaign. Within the cemetery, there are 3,236 individual graves belonging to soldiers whose identities have been established (featuring metal crosses for Christian soldiers, metal plaques for Jewish soldiers, and upright stone markers for Muslim colonial soldiers), while the remains of thousands of unidentified soldiers—recovered from the battlefields, particularly the Kerevizdere line known to the French as the "Valley of Death"—are housed in four large mass grave structures (ossuaries) located at the corners of the site.
