Description

The ancient city of Sagalassos is located in the Ağlasun district of Burdur. Many of the structures of this city—which served as the capital of Pisidia in ancient Greece—have remained standing, at least in part; the theater is the best-preserved among them. Situated on the slopes of Mount Akdağ, the city lies at an elevation of approximately 1,500 to 1,700 meters above sea level. Renowned for the magnificence of its fountains, Sagalassos is known for having the world's highest-altitude theater—with a capacity of 9,000 spectators—and for its distinctive rock-cut tombs. The busts of Ares, Hercules, Hermes, Zeus, Athena, and Poseidon found at the site, dating back to the reign of Trajan, are considered significant examples of ancient sculpture. Additionally, two stories of the Roman bath complex, which features numerous pools, have survived to the present day.
